Frequently Asked Questions

Blowgun World

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Can I use darts and paintballs with the same blowgun?
Yes.  As long as the caliber is the same for the blowgun as it is for the darts and paintballs,
2.  What are the different sizes and their advantages?
Commercial blowguns range in size from 18" up to 72".  Blowgun World carries 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, and 72.  They are available in 1 or 2 pieces.  The length tends to be a personal choice. Imagine yourself holding a 1/2" tube, reaching and loading the end, holding it up to your mouth, aiming and blowing forcefully into it. That said, here are a couple blowgun facts. The longer the blowgun, the more accurate your shot. Also, the object you are shooting has more potential to go faster and farther with a longer BG - provided you put enough breath into it.
3.  What are the different calibers and what are the advantages of each?
Blowguns come in .40, .50 and .62 calibers.  Sometimes shown as cal.  They used to come in .38 but manufacturers have stopped making that size.  The most popular size is .40cal.  The caliber is stating the width of the blowgun in hundreths of an inch.  With .40 you can play paintball games, target shoot, you can try shooting at small game, but without an accurate hit to a vital organ, it may only wound the animal or bounce off.  .50 is used for paintball games and hunting very small game. (Many paintball markers use .50). .62 is used more for hunting small game.  There are limited accessories for the larger sizes.

5.  What is FPS?
Feet Per Second.  Used to estimate the speed  of the dart blown from the blowgun.
6.  How accurage are blowguns?
The accuracy depends upon the user of the blowgun (blowgunner).  Some claim that blowguns are the most accurate weapon available.
7.  What colors do they come in?
The most popular colors are black and camoflauge.  They also come in blue, red and purple.
8.  How do I hold a blowgun?
Place one hand on the blowgun handle which should be about 18" from the mouthpiece.  Place your other hand on the blowgun near the mouthpiece.  Place the mouthpiece to your mouth.  The elbow of your front hand should be directly below the gun, just like when shooting a rifle.
9.  How do I blow into a blowgun?
Place the blowgun mouthpiece at your lips and point the muzzle at your target.  Breathe in deeple through your nose or turn your head away from the blowgun and take a deep breath filling your diaphram with air.  (Never take a breath while your mouth is on the mouthpiece)  Keeping your lips tightly sealed to the mouthpiece, blow into the blowgun with a fast & hard burst of air almost like you are blowing out a big candle.  Feel your diaphram contract to push out the breath.  You'll want to learn to duplicate this breath to make your shots consistent.
10.  How do I aim?
Using the sight (or muzzle) on the end of the blowgun, line it up on your target.  Practice a few times and see where it is hitting.  Adjust until you are hitting right on each time.  You will learn to gauge the distance between the target and the muzzle as your eyes work as the hindsight and the muzzle is your foresight.  Lining these up with the target will make your shots very accurate.  As with anything, practice, practice, practice.  And enjoy!
11.  Do I have to stand up when I shoot?
No.  You can stand when you shoot or kneel, sit, crouch or lay on the ground.  You can also use almost anything to help support or hold the end of the blowgun.  Be sure and practice if you are using a support as your aiming may change.

Another note regarding blowguns.  You must be 18 years old to purchase a blowun.  It is not legal to sell and use a blowgun in every state.  As of this writing, California and Massachusetts do not allow the sale or use of a blowgun unless you have a permit.  In addition, there are some cities and counties in the "legal" states where it is illegal to buy and use a blowgun.  Blowguns are not as widely used as other guns and so it is easy for legislatures to pass anti-blowgun laws.  Please check with your local county and city law officers to find out if you may legally buy and use them before purchasing.
